A little plein air painting from yesterday. We've had great weather up here in Salida, CO. Karen and I hiked up a path into the hills behind Salida. It's now one of my favorite trails in the area. There is so much just on that trail would make for good painting. Expect to see more from this location soon.

I've always found the shape of this peak interesting. It has a very bold and powerful presence to it. I took a very direct alla prima approach to the painting. It felt like that would be the best way to convey the bold feeling of this mountain.

I love this painting spot. I've painted here numerous times. I've painted it in the Spring, Summer, Fall, and now winter. Since I got all the seasons now, I'll have to paint it at different times of the day. Maybe a sunset will be next.

More Nude Gestures

Some more Nude Gestures. I really enjoy painting in monochrome. I can really focus on mark making and drawing this way.

I really enjoy doing gestural sketches with monochromatic oils. It's a challenge to get a sense of the shape and form and to say something about the energy of the pose.

Painting Video: Mountain Farm

Here's a little experiment / practice in making a sped up painting video. I didn't know what I was doing with making a video but I think I figured some things out for the next one. I shot it with my digital camera which has a video setting. For the next one I'll shoot a painting from start to finish.

I was very interested in painting this Tree Branch covered in snow. Studying this subject I found that there's so much color bouncing around. Reflective light bouncing from the light off the ground. Greens reflecting from underneath the branches above. Blues from the sky. There's so much you don't always stop and take note of.
